Feature: Jay-Z & Hip-Hop

Jay-Z. Hov. Jigga Man. Shaun Carter. Whatever you call him, he's the man. Regular readers of the blog will probably know my affections for Jay-Z and my respect for him as an artist, what he has done for hip hop but more importantly, what he has done for a generation. There's so much I can't relate to about hip hop and the culture that surrounds it, I'm a white guy who grew up in a middle class tiny village in the New Forest. Hardly hip hop. But the beats of hip hop have always appealed to me and although my music taste was always domiantd my guitar music, rock, indie, metal, hip-hop is slowly but surely starting to take over my iTunes.

One of the main reasons that I listen to so much these days is because I have developed a much greater understanding of the genre as a whole. So many people, especially my white friends I'm afraid to say, dismiss the entire genre. They don't even give it a chance and that pains me. Sure some is terrible, but name me a genre of music when there isn't someone dragging down the geniuses. Hip-hop contains such great cultural references, rytheming skills, clever and intelligent word-play and above all, great story telling. Jay-Z is kind of this. End of.

Sure maybe he can't make beats like Kanye, sound like Drake, or flow like J Cole, but without Jay-Z, these guys wouldn't exist. A culture wouldn't exist. It's difficult to over-exaggerate the effect that one man has had. He trail-blazed the way for kids who grew up in rough estates, who had nothing but drugs as their only option. He showed them a way out. It doesn't have to be hip-hop but he made a generation wake up and realise that their life doesn't have to be over before it's begun. Reading his book Decoded made me realise this. It is not a book about his life, but more about himself as part of a generation. It also taught me how important hip-hop is to tell a story, and how clever it can be in doing so. There's a lot of songs about money, hoes and rims, some of these really are part of a story - but some are just terrible. It's not a life that I can relate to, and I'm thankful to that, but it's something that I can appreciate.

The key to his success is that he has managed to stay relevant, honest and smarrt which is some feat for a man over the age of 40, has a business empire and married to of the most beautiful women ever. Jay-Z is timeless, a modern day icon.

The Bullitts X Rosario Dawson = Supercool.

Probably one of the best music videos I've seen in a long time.
It's got Jeymes Samuel being a hero as usual.
It's got an incredible bit of music by The Bullitts.
And it's got Rosario Dawson with some SLAMMING moves.

Can't wait for The Bullitts in 2012.

5 People. 1 Guitar!

I try not to post 'Youtube hits' on here, but this is too awesome and I'm too obsessed.

The Fans On The Pitch.

The other night I watched Moneyball and it got me thinking about the romance and stories that happen in sport. For those who haven't seen Moneyball, it is based on the American baseball team Oakland A's who used players who were the best based on their stats. They made the team based solely on probably and value, hardly the most sexy or romantic of words. Behind many of the greatest sporting moments are statistics, often simply out scoring your opponent, or becoming an all time goal scorer. But sport is so much more than that.

Now I'm not going to sit here and tell you some of sports greatest moments, there should be a section of the Internet separated off to that, right along side Beiber and cat videos. Yet, this week has brought romanticism in sport up front seeing the return of 2 undoubted football legends, Paul Scholes and Thierry Henry. Seeing Henry score the winner on his second debut for arsenal, where he is the all time leading goal scorer, was a beautiful and story worthy moment. Yet what got me was his reaction, the genuine passion and joy that burst out of him in a 3rd FA cup match against Leeds.

In an age when the players earn more in a week than the average fan does in half a decade, players motivations and  level of passion is often called into question. Henry said in his post match interview that he scored that night as a fan, the first time he has ever felt that. Imagine scoring the winning goal for you favourite team for a second. Beyond incredible. Players are always pretty happy when they score, fans always are. Yet there are few occasions that spring to mind of a player scoring as a fan, the unbrididle joy and emotion, it's more than a winning goal, more than a bonus, more than a step towards a golden boot. When Beckham scored against Argentina and Greece, he did it not only for the England football team, but for the nation, every person felt themselves in his shoes as he stepped up, we screamed together.

BBC Sound of 2011 Review.

Each year the holy BBC puts together a list of their music predictions for the upcoming year. This list is based on a range of musical knowing people from critics, broadcasters, reviewers and other people with ears. Past results have suggested that the predictions are pretty spot on as Adele, Ellie Goulding and Keane are all previous winners (even if Jessie J did win it last year).

This year I can say that I am thoroughly impressed and pleased with the top three results this year; Azealia Banks, Frank Ocean and winner Michael Kiwanuka.

3. Azealia Banks

Azealia Banks blew up and she blew up with one song, 212. As soon as I heard the song I loved it and everything about. Rhyming obscenities whilst wearing a Mickey Mouse jumper is quite a way to get attention. Team that up with a great beat (that she stole from Lady Jay - Lady Jay was not happy about this), some chicken dancing and a whole lot of attitude and you've got a hell of a tune. With other songs, such as Liquorice and team up with the Scissor Sisters, she's proving that she is definitely not a one hit wonder. If she stays true to her roots, there could be one hell of an album here.

2. Frank Ocean

Now people have big first years, and then people have a year like Frank Ocean. His group, Odd Future, exploded onto the scene in a big old ball of hype and some individuals of the group, most notably Tyler The Creator and Frank Ocean showed the world their solo work. Not only did Frank have one of the most critically acclaimed albums, Nostalgia Ultra, of the year that he gave away for free, he featured on possibly one of the biggest albums of the year, Watch The Throne. You know, the one with Kanye West and Jay-Z. Yeah, that one. Imagine getting that call.

Despite this year, he still comes across as humble and intelligent, and this is reflected in his song writing. He, along with The Weeknd, made me like R&B. Yep. The guy not only writes great lyrics, but also produces great beats and puts together some amazing videos, namely in the form of Novacane and Swim Good. A serious, serious talent.

Michael Kiwanuka

The first time I heard Michael Kiwanuka was on Jools Holland and was instantly taken by his voice. Admittedly, I've listen to his less than the others but I still love his voice. It's smooth, soulful and he clearly knows his way around a guitar. Like Ocean, he comes across as humble and hardworking, and also like Ocean, he has received a phone call from Jay-Z. It looks like Hov still knows his talent. Not only from his say-so, but also from Michael's music you can tell that there is a variety of influences in, which makes it all the more interesting to listen to that a standard singer-songwriter. It should make the album a interesting and complete listen, can't wait.
